Indiana’s world-famous western façade will be retained and enhanced as part of Tattarang’s comprehensive new vision to transform the iconic but ageing building into a modern, accessible and world-class beachside precinct.

Designed to create Australia’s best beachside environment and deliver generational community benefits for all Cottesloe beach visitors, a new multi-level terraced design will create new restaurants, cafés and family-friendly kiosks, a promenade and covered public plaza, plus a multi-million-dollar upgrade for the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club.

Tattarang’s vision features two separate but interconnected structures that ‘step’ down towards the ocean, replicating the existing Cottesloe Terraces and the natural landscape of the sand dunes. To the west, the existing Teahouse building is enhanced and transformed, while a new building at the rear of the site is nestled amongst the surrounding Norfolk Island pine trees and floating above the Marine Parade level, providing improved public shelter and spaces to enjoy, while maximising sight lines to the beach.

The new vision has been developed by Tattarang’s property division Fiveight in consultation with Woods Bagot and is the culmination of more than two years of planning and stakeholder engagement, including a public design competition. The vision for the project is to deliver “a backyard for locals and a front door for visitors”.

Tattarang Director Nicola Forrest AO said the next chapter for Indiana must be one that respected the history of the site while delivering a sustainable future that allowed for much-needed improvements to be delivered.

“We share the community’s passion to retain Indiana’s iconic western façade and to preserve the building’s legacy for future generations. As the committed custodians of this important site, we believe Indiana can, and should, play a more meaningful role in the lives of locals and visitors alike, and our ambitions are clear: we want to deliver the best beachside precinct in Australia; one for all Western Australians to enjoy,” Mrs Forrest said.

Tattarang CEO Andrew Hagger said the project is expected to create more than 113 ongoing jobs and inject millions of dollars into the local economy during construction.

“With the development proposal now submitted to the Town of Cottesloe, we believe a renewed Indiana will assist Cottesloe Council fully realise their vision for the wider foreshore by providing seamless connections with the broader beach precinct, deliver new public facilities for all beach users and visitors, and further enhance the area’s world-renowned character,” Mr Hagger said.

Tattarang’s lifestyle division Z1Z has temporarily reactivated Indiana’s restaurant area as a vibrant Latin-themed pop up called Indigo Oscar, which will operate while the long-term vision proceeds through approval processes.
