The proposed development for the Planned Precinct of St Leonards and Crows Nest must include increased height and more mixed uses around the metro station, says the Urban Taskforce.
“The Department of Planning has recently issued a package of information on the Planned Precinct of St Leonards and Crows Nest that asks for inputs from the community,” says Urban Taskforce CEO, Chris Johnson.
“With a new metro station at Crows Nest we expected significant new development but it seems the focus is on retaining the existing character. With Sydney growing from its present 5 million people to 8 million over the next 40 years development opportunities around new metro rail infrastructure must be maximised.”
“The Planning Department has recently issued guidelines on local character that seem to discourage significant change to a neighbourhood. The government and councils must encourage a quality new local character that reflects the swing to urban living in mixed-use precincts.”
“There is a significant amount of design work contained in the package of information for the precinct but we believe options that allow more density around rail and metro stations should be developed.”
“The Greater Sydney Commission in its District Plans seems to be discouraging residential accommodation in strategic centres. The Urban Taskforce believes that strategic centres should have a dynamic mixture of uses that gives a vibrant cosmopolitan character.”
The Urban Taskforce is keen to work with the Department of Planning and Environment, the Greater Sydney Commission and the three councils involved to ensure that an exciting new urban character occurs in the St Leonards and Crows Nest precinct.”
