Calm and comfort to influence design trends in 2021

There’s no doubt that the events of the past 12 months have changed how we think about our homes. With overseas travel on ice, our homes are filling the summer sojourn-sized holes in our lives as we find calm and comfort in our own private sanctuaries.

With homes becoming our ‘everything’ space, integrated property and construction group Pindan, gives us their top interior design trend predictions for 2021.

All around the world

As we escape to far away distant lands – now in our minds - expect our interior spaces to branch out from the European influence. 2021 should see us add vibrancy to our homes by exploring new materials and styles from a mosaic of designers and cultures. Strong patterns and textures are set to feature strongly, with a big revival of safari style prints and warmer colour palettes borrowed from nature and wild frontiers. 

On land or sea 

A dual interior design narrative is building momentum as we draw closer to the New Year. Comforting earthy tones are set to make a big colour statement, from bronze, to rich reds, rusts and browns. In stark contrast, watch for a stunning ocean blue trend inspired by a collective longing for coastal getaways and relaxing resort pools. Calming aquas and inky blues should command a big design presence as we transition from cool neutral greys into modern interior tranquillity.  

The art of handmade 

As countries all around the world get reacquainted with themselves, a greater appreciation for the art of local, quality handmade pieces is starting to make its way into Australian homes. Similar to the iconic ‘arts and crafts’ movement of the 1800s, homeowners and interior stylists are rebelling against mass produced pieces in favour of unique craftsmanship with the fingerprints of time and love all over it. 

Take me home, country road 

2020 will go down as the year that reminded us there’s no place like home. As we place more meaning in our everyday, the desire to seek out comfort and nostalgia grows. In the year ahead, look for a modern spin on traditional country style to announce itself. Simplistic elegance will be the order of the day, blending the old and new with hints of tasteful English vintage, classic florals, saturated colour palettes, gold trim accents and sculptural furniture. 

A brave new world 

If we’ve learned anything in the last twelve months it’s that life’s too short to play it safe (well, in design anyway!). As we tick over into the New Year, we should see more and more homeowners and designers throw caution to the wind and bravely transform their interiors with mood lifting statement style. We’re predicting authenticity in a big way, from playful swathes of colour and pattern, to shimmering wallpaper finishes and carefully curated florals.
