Low maintenance wins out with gardens

Property buyers are becoming more open to different approaches to keeping a garden in good shape due to changing weather conditions and water restrictions, according to South Australian real estate firm Anreps.

Property sellers should consider different approaches to a low maintenance garden, such as synthetic lawn, Anreps manager Sam Cole says.

"Don't stress over a stressed out garden, just think smarter," Cole suggests.

"South Australian homeowners have accepted the difficulty in maintaining a green garden all year round, particularly with the burden of water restrictions."

"Thriving gardens and lush green grass are now not a necessity to potential buyers, particularly through the summer months."

"Perceptions are changing and there's becoming more of an understanding that gardens cannot and will not be up to scratch all the time, even in the sale process."

"In the event of selling their homes, vendors are finding other ways to get around water restrictions to maintain a level of neatness in the back and front yards."

"We're seeing many vendors taking a different approach to dressing up their back and front yards."

"This includes opting for a low maintenance garden setting, covering patchy areas with bark chips as well as planting native trees, shrubs and flowers."

"Other vendors are opting for synthetic lawn, which brightens up the garden and helps to create an emotional impact for the potential buyer."
