Average Sydney rent nears $400

NSW Housing Minister David Borger has released figures showing that rents in Sydney were relatively stable during the September 2009 quarter, with the average weekly rent increasing just $5.

That puts the average weekly rent at $395, according to the latest edition of Housing NSW's Rent and Sales Report.

"Whether these figures will dramatically change with the flow-on effect of the latest hike in interest rates will be something to watch in the next quarter," Borger says.

The cheapest place to rent a four-bedroom home is in Wyong at an average of $355 a week, followed by the Blue Mountains and Campbelltown, both at $380.

For one-bedroom homes, the cheapest are again in Wyong ($160 per week), then Gosford ($185 per week) and Penrith ($188 per week).

Four-bedroom homes in Woollahra are the most expensive rentals, with an average of $1510 per week, while the most expensive one-bedders are in Willoughby at an average of $430 per week.
