A sustainable plan for Wide Bay Burnett region
Posted on Thursday, November 10 2011 at 11:37 AM
Approximately 98 per cent of the Wide Bay Burnett region will be protected from intensive development under a new regional plan released in September to guide sustainable growth, according to the Acting Queensland Minister for Local Government and Planning Annastacia Palaszczuk.
The region covers areas from Monto in the north, to Blackbutt in the south, east to Fraser Island and west to Eidsvold and the Auburn River.
“This level of protection will help maintain natural drawcards such as Fraser Island and the Great Sandy Strait Wetland, as well as other ecologically important areas, waterways and other green spaces,” said Palaszczuk.
The region’s population is expected to increase to 425,200 by 2031, up from 293,500 in 2010.
To cater to this growth 57,300 dwellings are still needed, said Palaszczuk.
