Value in energy efficient measures

The energy efficiency rating of a house and its sale price are positively related, according to new research.
The Energy Efficiency Rating and House Price in the ACT report – the first of its kind in Australia – made the findings.
It examined the correlation between property prices and energy efficiency in the Australian Capital Territory in 2005 and 2006, taking into account location.
Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett says the research shows taking simple, practical actions around the home can make a difference to the hip pocket in both the short and long term.
“Installing insulation or retrofitting the latest in efficiency products to your home now will help lower your utility bills today and based on the findings of this report potentially add to the value of the home when it’s time to sell,” he says.
ACT Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Water Simon Corbell says while location is traditionally one of the most important considerations for first homebuyers, a higher energy efficiency rating is also a factor in delivering a good result.
“The findings of this report provide real incentives for property owners to invest in energy efficiency and real encouragement for the housing industry to ensure that new homes are as efficient as possible,” he says.
